The Universal Principle of Design I thought I would explore today is Symmetry.  Symmetry for me is used to create balance and harmony in a design.

Mandalas, Kailediscopes and Nature provide excellent examples of Symmetry. Take a look at some of these at http://www.pinterest.com/nvwmcg/symmetry/

There are three types of symmetry:

1) Reflection: mirroring around an axis or central line

2) Rotation: at any angle around a centre point

3) Translation: a basic orientation of the element is maintained over any distance or direction

How does symmetry play out in webdesign? Here are some examples:

When designing I find I am subconsciously looking to balance the site or page by using these techniques of symmetry.  It helps to create a clean, balanced and aesthetically pleasing piece to view.
